OK, so you have a gorgeous wood ceiling in your home but years of dust and cobwebs have been accumulating so now what?  Here are some steps to cleaning your wood ceiling so your ceilings looking like new (or like clean reclaimed barn boards).

So lets get started with cleaning your wood ceiling by following these steps

Step 1 | Dust That Ceiling

Dust the wood ceiling with a clean cloth or a dusting tool. Because it is a ceiling, you may prefer using a dusting tool with an arm that can be extended so you can more easily complete the task.  If you need to use a ladder use caution and work with a partner to hold the ladder when possible.

Step 2 | Select A Mild Cleaner

Mix mild dish detergent or another household cleaner in a bucket filled with 1 gallon of warm water.  you may also choose a wood cleaning detergent if desired.  If your wood is untreated use extra caution when selecting a cleaning agent.  Some cleaners and soaps can leave a residue that will cause issues if the ceiling is ever going to be finished.

Step 3 | Wash Your Wood Ceiling

Saturate a rag or sponge with the cleaning solution and wring out the excess water. Make sure the rag is not too heavily saturated, otherwise it will drip while you are cleaning the ceiling.  Less is more in this instance.

Step 4 | Tackle It In Sections

Begin wiping down the wood ceiling is small sections.  We also suggest doing a small test area in an inconspicuous location first to ensure you don’t have any unforeseen color changing.  This is especially true with older paints, stains and reclaimed woods.

Step 5 | Dry, Dry and Make Dryer

Dry each newly cleaned section with a clean, dry towel or cloth.  Keeping the wood clean and dry is important to maintain its health and prevent staining.

Step 6 | Rinse and Repeat

Continue wiping down and drying each section of the ceiling until the entire surface has been cleaned and dried.
