Project Description
The project consisted of the construction of a new residence designed by the acclaimed Palm Beach Architect, Jeffrey W. Smith, AIA, in collaboration with world renowned Interior Designer Mario Buatta. The project was completed in 2002 with Bruce Cianci as project manager at Miller Construction Company and was featured in the April 2006 issue of Architectural Digest. The estate is set on over 2 acres of elegantly landscaping created by Martin L. Fox, an English horticulturalist. The residence is over 16,000 sqft.
Project Location
This estate residence is located on a private island just to the west of Surfside called Indian Creek. Indian Creek is known for its large estate homes surrounding a world class golf course. The club house is also a historical landmark designed by Maurice Fatio, a well known architect in the 1920’s.
Project Challenges
The new residence replaced an older residence that was demolished. During construction the old structural piling were encountered during excavation for the basement which was built 25’ below water to house the windows and lifts for the rear covered loggia. The Covered Loggia is normally open to the bay breezes from the south but when desired or during a rain storm these 12’ high windows could be raised to stop the rain from entering into this space which was then cooled by the air conditioning system.
